Analog drum kits vs electronic drum kits

I started playing drums when I was 6 or 7 years old. My cousin lived next door and had a very nice Ludwig kit and hundreds of records. I had natural rhythm and drums came pretty easily to me. So most of my life I played acoustic (analog) kits. Electronic kits weren't even a thing until quite a few years after I started playing.

Recently, I bought my first electronic kit. It's a mid-range Yamaha model. I bought it sight unseen. I've played Roland kits before, but had never played a Yamaha. So far I like it although if I were buying again I'd get I'd probably get an Efnote.

The bottom line is this. If you have the space and excess noise isn't going to cause issues, get an acoustic kit. The drumming experience is just so much more natural. If space and noise are a concern then go electric. Just know the overall drumming experience (particularly things like playing the hi-hats and cymbals) will require some modifications to your playing style.

I don't hate my Yamaha electronic kit. I just don't love it. I know some people use them to play live with. There's no way I could use one in a live band. The little idiosyncrasies you have to deal with on an electronic kit would drive me insane.

As a practice tool I give electronic a thumbs-up. As a performance instrument, I'd have to say no way. At least for me. That's my two cents...

Until next time, take care...
