The most important thing to consider when buying a new camera

leaves

The most important thing you need to consider when buying a new camera isn't what you think it is. It's not the sensor size. In fact, it's not a spec many people pay attention to until a few months down the road. Put simply, it's the camera size. The bigger the camera, the higher the chance you leave it at home. In other words, the siren song of a full frame sensor camera may sound magical until the reality of lugging it around all day becomes a reality.

Let's face it. Most professional and prosumer level full frame cameras are big and heavy. If you are a pro and you earn your living with it I can see the value in owning someone like the Nikon Z8 for example. But, if the end goal isn't large wall-sized prints then what's the point of hauling a boat anchor around all day?

Some of my favorite images are from a micro 4/3rds sensor camera I once owned. Full frame is great, but my guess is the average amateur photographer will probably never print anything larger than 16x20.

My point is this. The glow of a highly spec'd pro level full frame camera is hard to resist. In other words, if you can afford it why not buy the absolute best camera that can produce the highest quality image, right? In theory, it sounds like a good plan. In practice, you may quickly come to the realization that big cameras get left at home a lot. At least that's been my experience.

It's just something I wanted to throw out there before you plunk down a few thousand on a camera you quickly get tired of carrying around.

Until next time... take care.
