Random acts of kindness and the Pokemon community

Today I took my grandson to the local card shop for Pokemon cards. It's a ritual with us. We always like looking at the cards. He's nine years old, so the concept of money isn't foreign to him but the concept of just how long and how hard you have to work for it still isn't something he fully understands.

Pokemon card collecting isn't a cheap hobby. And my grandson has excellent taste in cards. I was trying to explain to him that while I get why he liked a PSA 10 Charizard, a $585 card wasn't in the budget. I talked him down to reality and said I'd splurge on a $50 card. When he finally picked a card (a sleeping Charizard) we were debating on what packs of cards to get for my other grandson who was home recuperating from a recent illness.

A young guy sitting at a table with a pile of cards in front of him said to my grandson "Hey, I've got something I want you to see." He pulled out some graded cards out of his shirt pocket, pulled out a CGC grade 10 slab and said "I'd like you to have this." My grandson was super surprised and said thank you. He then introduced himself to me. I explained that it was a really nice thing to do. He told me he made it a habit of giving a few cards away to young collectors each month.

We got home and looked the card up. It was a $45 card. Needless to say, my grandson was pretty excited.

It's random acts of kindness like this that restore my faith in humanity. I've seen quite a few YouTube videos where vendors at card shows have done similar things to help a young collector get a card for his collection. It's always fun to see the look on a kids face when they get a card they probably would never get without a little help from the Pokemon community.

Until next time, take care...
