Things I don't like about the OM System OM-3

I love my OM-3. It's an incredible creative tool. But, there are still a few things I don't like. Here are the things that I wish were a little better.

OM-3 Menus

The camera does so many things that it's going to take a while to learn the right menu/button combinations that allow you to adjust the various nodes on the camera. For example, adjusting the black and white curves to set a custom profile wasn't very user friendly. I had to consult instructions more than a couple of times to finally figure out how to make those changes.

I completely understand that fitting all of these menu options in a completely usable way is difficult. My point is that if you expect to pick up the camera and run with it, you'll need to expect that setting it up isn't as intuitive as other camera because of all the options available to you.

Once you pick up on the right combination of PASM, OK button, Arrow button combinations to adjust various camera setting nodes, using the OM-3 becomes massively easier. It's just going to take some time to figure all of these out.

HDMI/USB-C covers

The OM-3 has a water resistance rating of IP53. The plastic covers over the ports don't instill a lot of confidence. While they do stay in place, it does feel like they are easier to dislodge than I'd like.

After some investigation I did read that the internal circuitry has multiple redundant internal seals. I'll assume that if moisture were to breach a port, the guts of the camera would be OK.

Custom Color Profiles

Understanding the process to set custom color profiles to the C1-C5 options took a bit more effort and research than I thought it would. Again, it would be a better user experience if it were a bit more intuitive.

This is just an extension of my menus complaint. Once you get it, the process is repeatable without a ton of effort, but just to expect to sit with the camera and look for the right instructions to complete the custom color profiles workflow.

Viewfinder resolution

I just think at this price point the viewfinder resolution should be a notch higher. This is a small nit, but I could see that an all day shooting session could cause some eye fatigue.

Conclusion

There will never be the perfect camera. Eventually, when I complete my post on all of the things I love about the camera, you'll see these are relatively minor. I just think it's important to point out these issues because investing in a camera system is an expensive decision.

Until next time... take care...
